For train times and to book tickets, visit the Deutsche Bahn website.

Due to construction work the schedule for the direct regional trains and ICE trains from Munich to Passau changes after 14. June 2026 around 6pm. If you arrive later please check the DB website to ensure that you change trains at the right time. There are replacement busses (SEV - Schienenersatzverkehr) that will cover the sections of the route where the train is not running. (RE 3 from/to Landau, for travel from/to Munich)

The main train lines serving Passau are:

Trains Route
Intercity (IC) trains
  • Nuremberg – Passau – Vienna
  • Dortmund – Cologne – Frankfurt/Main – Würzburg – Nuremberg – Regensburg – Passau – Linz – Vienna – Budapest
Intercity Express (ICE) trains
  • Ostend – Amsterdam – Brussels – Aachen – Frankfurt/Main – Würzburg – Nuremberg – Regensburg – Passau – Vienna
  • Hamburg – Hanover – Göttingen – Würzburg – Nuremberg – Passau – Vienna
Regional Express trains (RE)
  • Munich – Landshut – Plattling – Passau

From Munich Airport (MUC):

Onward journey by train: connections and tickets via Deutsche Bahn website. You can travel from Munich airport to Passau by train: reasonable connections (with one easy transition on the same platform in Freising) run every 2 hours and the duration of the trip is about 2,5 hours. You can buy tickets online, or on the spot at every train station, also at the airport train station. The best fare to get from Munich to Passau is the regional day ticket for Bavaria (so-called “Bayern Ticket”) for around 30€, which allows you to take all city- and regional trains in Bavaria that day.

The most frequent connection to Passau is the train “RE 22” to the destination “Regensburg”. You need to get off at the station “Freising”, and change to the train “RE 3” to Passau. Due to construction work you might need to change to the replacement bus service (SEV - Schienenersatzverkehr) RE 3 in Landau that will cover the rest of the route to Passau.

Onward journey by car: via autobahn A92 Landshut – Passau.

From Linz Airport (LNZ):

Onward journey by train: Take the shuttle bus to Hörsching Railway Station ('Bahnhof Hörsching'), then take the Hörsching – Wels – Passau train. ÖBB-Website for train tickets.

Onward journey by car: Via autobahn A25/A8 in the direction of Passau. This is a toll road – please make sure you have the correct toll sticker ('Vignette') attached to your windscreen before you enter the autobahn. Toll stickers can be purchased from most gas stations.

Other airports

The airport in Vienna (VIE) can also be reached fairly easily from Passau. However, taking the train from there generally requires tickets for high speed / long distance trains, which are more costly when bought on the day of travel or as flexible tickets. ÖBB-Website for train tickets.

We do not advise going to those airports, but you can travel to and from all other German airports, like Nürnberg (NUE), Frankfurt (FRA), Leipzig/Halle (LEJ) or Berlin (BER) with Rail&Fly Tickets, if your chosen airline offers them.

Leave the autobahn A3 at exit 'Passau Mitte' and, at the traffic lights, turn left in the direction of Passau. Follow the road for about one kilometre, then take the first exit right onto Pionierstrasse. Proceed along this road until you reach a T-junction, then turn left onto Neuburgerstrasse. Keep going straight along this street. After about 1.5 kilometres, when you reach the fifth set of traffic lights, turn right onto Leonhard-Paminger-Strasse and keep going until you reach the T-junction, where you should turn left onto Innstrasse. You will see the University buildings come up on your right and left as you continue along Innstrasse.

For more information on parking spaces and car parksplease refer to the parking in Passau guide provided by the city.

You can conveniently walk all distances between most hotels and conference venues. The walk will rarely take longer than 20 minutes. If you still prefer public transport, please go to the main bus station (called “ZOB”) where buses leave every 15 or 30 minutes in all directions. All city bus services are available here (only in German): https://bahnland-bayern.de/de/moby/ueberblick

Two buses are of special interest:

To move around town: The CityBus goes from the train station (“Hauptbahnhof”) via ZOB and town hall (“Rathaus”) to “Römerplatz” (which is close to many hotels) and back between 6.45 am until 8 pm.

To get to the University/IT-Zentrum: Bus 8 or 9 to “PEB/Kohlbruck” or “Kohlbruck/Erlebnisbad” leaves at ZOB, every 30 minutes, beginning at is 6.30 a.m. Get off at “Wörthstraße” to walk another 5 minutes to IT-Zentrum.

Internet/Wi-Fi

Redoute: open guest Wi-Fi available

IT-Zentrum: the University of Passau is part of the eduroam project, so you can use eduroam Wi-Fi if you have registered at your home university. Alternatively, you can use the open Wi-Fi called “@BayernWLAN”

Luggage room

We have a luggage room available at the conference venue. Please contact the reception desk if you want to use it.

Stay hydrated!

Tap water is safe (and delicious) to drink in Passau. You can bring your own refill-bottle, and there will be bottled mineral water available at all conference venues.

Parking

Passau, and Passau’s old town especially has many narrow streets. We recommend leaving the car at your hotel or at a car park.

Recommended parking

Redoute: Public parking “Parkhaus Innstadt” (Jahnstraße 1, 94032 Passau, 1€ per hour, 5 walking minutes from the venue)

IT-Zentrum: University car park under the IT-Zentrum building (Innstraße 43) is open for conference guests. Enter the small road between the buildings Innstraße 41 and Innstraße 45, and you will find the entrance to the car park right in front of you. Parking is drive-in and for free.

Money

The currency used in Passau is Euro (€). ATMs are widely available throughout Passau, and most are open 24 hours a day. Souvenir and clothing stores accept all major credit cards, however some grocery stores, cafes and some restaurants might accept cash only.

Conversions

Distances in Germany are given in kilometers; 1 mile = 1.61 kilometers. Temperature is given in degrees Celsius; Celsius to Fahrenheit: multiply Celsius by 1.8 and add 32 to convert to Fahrenheit.

Tipping

Service and VAT are included in the menu price in restaurants, bars, etc. all over Germany. Still, it is typical to “round up” the amount to some more or less round figure. A rule of thumb is to add 5-10%, generally to a full amount. It is not typical to leave your money on the table after you receive the check but pay the waiter/waitress directly.

Time zone

Central European Summer Time (UTC+02:00)

Smoking

Smoking is generally forbidden inside all buildings. It is allowed only outside buildings or in designated smoking areas.

Emergency

In emergency situations, you can contact the local police by calling 110, and the fire department or ambulance by calling 112.
